August 1, 2005 -- What is effective, simple, secure, unique, and augments productivity in the work place? It’s a technologically configured “genie in a lamp,” also known as a custom computer application designed by experts who understand the goals and needs of a business. Wishes for raving clients, high dollar and satisfied employees are granted tenfold when they are realized in software form.
“ Retail software is appealing because it can be installed in minutes and performs at least the basic functions a company need... ”
CM Tech, a Colorado IT consulting and design firm, addressed the shortcomings of one client’s store-bought software and created an application to put them on the fast track to success.
The Advocates, owned and operated by Marcus Ollig, is a Denver-based search and staffing firm for legal professionals. Their core business asset is series of business processes that guarantee a match between their clients and candidates at an industry-leading rate. However, the “over the counter” database software they initially installed was not able to successfully integrate the key components of their processes. The software had a complicated user interface and ultimately compromised the information’s integrity.
Ollig and his associates approached CM Tech because of growing frustrations fueled by their substandard software. Their data was incongruent, Ollig disliked the grouping options of the contacts, and the software ate away hard drive space with unnecessary features. The Advocates needed a sophisticated yet manageable application that furthered their core competencies, without flashy extras.
CM Tech designed and implemented a Web application called XIA. XIA compares to popular database applications like ACT! but also includes customized data consistency, contact grouping and usage tracking capabilities. Most importantly, XIA uses a fraction of the computer resources and has an intuitive interface that Advocates employees can comfortably use, even in remote locations.
“CM Tech’s solution is intuitive, productive, and has truly helped us capitalize on our competitive advantage,” stated Ollig.
CM Tech’s design improved customer relationship management by its immediate accessibility to database entries and the ability to enter information directly into the database via the Web. The Advocates specified their “rules” for how information could be entered uniformly and completely. XIA systematized the grouping of contacts, which previously had to be done manually by Advocates staff. The company can also track business growth by recording statistics about their Web site database usage and client contacts.
Additionally, XIA was designed with enough flexibility to keep up with the Advocates’ changing face. As the legal system changes Ollig is confident that XIA can adapt to the needs of the client and lawyer databases.
What keeps companies from approaching IT consultants and mapping out their needs and visions? CM Tech owner Matt Mathias stated, “Too often businesses are concentrated on the here and now, regardless of the money they could save long-term. Retail software is appealing because it can be installed in minutes and performs at least the basic functions a company needs.”
Mathias said basic functions and unnecessary components are companies’ downfalls as those applications cannot adapt to changing visions, goals, and Market demands.
