GOGLOBAL28
GOGLOBAL28 GoGlobal Support of PDAs or Smart Phones
Question:
Can Go-Global be run on a PDA or Smart Phone device such as a Palm Pilot, Blackberry, or Treo?
Answer:
In short, no. Go-Global does not produce a client that will run on either Palm O/S or on Windows Mobile. There does exist a Windows CE 4.2 client that will work for true thin-client applications (such as some of the tablet hand-helds running Embedded Windows CE 4.2), but it will not run on a Windows Mobile device. For further explanation, see below:
We don't officially support our CE client on PDAs or Smartphones.
Following is some information on our requirements, our supported devices, and what the difference is between what we support (Embedded Windows CE
4.2) and what we don't (Windows Mobile).
CE CLIENT REQUIREMENTS
======================
1) We require the device to support 'C++ SEH' and 'RTTI'. The best way for this to be checked is in the 'ceconfig.h' file (usually in the 'windows'
directory).
If it has the 2 lines...
#define COREDLL_CRT_RTTI 1
#define COREDLL_CRT_CPP_SEH 1
then those features should be supported on that device. We obviously require other components, but so far it seems any CE GUI device seems to support these.
2) Windows CE 4.2 and above.
LIST OF SUPPORTED DEVICES:
=========================
In general, GO-Global should run on any device which meets the criteria above. However, we recommend testing on the actual device, using GO-Global and your application(s). IF YOU PROVIDE THE DEVICE TO GRAPHON LABS IN USA, WE WILL TEST YOUR DEVICE.
Examples of specific devices we have tested for recent prospects & customers
include:
1) ViewSonic's airsync : CE 4.2 using XScale CPU
2) MintWave ACC-Lite : CE 4.2 using x86 CPU (2 different versions)
3) MintWave ACC-mini : CE 4.2 using x86 CPU
4) Mitsubishi TX120 (x86 CPU)
5) Visionbank (www.visionbank.com) Various Models
Embedded Windows (Windows CE 4.2) vs. Mobile Windows
====================================================
Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 2003) & Smartphone are both just specific configurations of Windows CE 4.2 and not a separate operating system.
Likely more for 'market segment distinction' than anything, "Embedded Windows" and "Mobile Windows" have evolved to target the respective markets.
Embedded Windows (CE.NET, Embedded XP) these operating systems are geared towards running thin clients, slimmed down computers, call centers terminals and some PDA devices. Typically the display on these devices will be 640 X 480 or higher and will support most features of a typical computer.
(Keyboard, printer, mouse). CE.NET 4.2 was released in mid 2003 and has on going support from Microsoft.
Mobile Windows (Pocket PC, Pocket PC for phones and Smartphone OS) these operating systems are geared towards running PDA and mobile devices, phones and smart phones. These devices run small displays ½ VGA 320 X 240 or smaller and have limited peripheral support. The Windows Mobile OS is a slimmed down OS with less support for the functions of GO-Global. The display on these devices is not large enough to display a typical Windows application.
